Which Games Use 40mm Square Bases?
The 40mm square is where rank-and-file gaming moves from regiments to the heavy hitters — units fielded in small numbers that still need to rank up:
- Kings of War – the base for Large Infantry and Large Cavalry units.
- Warhammer Fantasy Battle – the classic size for large infantry, ogres, trolls and swarms.
- Warhammer: The Old World – used for larger models and monstrous infantry. Check your army list for the exact size on a given unit.
- The Ninth Age and other rank-and-file systems – wherever oversized models still need square edges to form up.

Solid, Low-Profile Construction
Made from high-quality 3D printed PLA, Terrain Genesis bases are built with a solid, sturdy design that provides excellent rigidity while maintaining a slim tabletop profile. At just 3mm high, they keep your miniatures close to the gaming surface while still providing the durability needed for regular gameplay — and they sit at the same height as our 20mm, 25mm and 30mm squares, so a unit built from mixed base sizes still ranks up level.
Textured Tops for Easier Basing
Every base is printed with a textured top surface, giving glue, sand, flock and texture paste something to key into. Basing materials grip far more readily than they do on a smooth face, which matters all the more across a larger footprint where scenic groundwork does real work.
Glue-Free Magnet Holes
Every base also has a magnet hole printed directly into it, sized to hold a magnet on friction alone. No glue required — magnets snap in by hand, or tap home with a light touch from a plastic mallet. Both versions have the hole; the only difference is whether the magnets come in the box.
