What every base has
A textured top surface, so glue, sand, flock and texture paste have something to key into and your groundwork actually stays put — basing materials grip far better than they do on a smooth face.
A magnet hole printed directly into the base, sized to hold a magnet on friction alone. No glue required: magnets snap in by hand or tap home with a plastic mallet. Larger bases carry two or more holes so heavy models sit flat. Every base has the hole — choose the With Magnets option to have magnets supplied, or fit your own.
A classic beveled edge and a low profile that keeps models close to the tabletop. Square bases from 20mm to 40mm are 3mm high and rank up level with each other; larger squares and all rectangular bases are 4mm for extra rigidity under heavier models.
Rebasing an older army?
If you are bringing a Warhammer Fantasy collection forward to The Old World, two changes account for most of the work: infantry moving from 20mm to 25mm square, and horse-mounted cavalry moving from 25x50mm to 30x60mm.
That second one is widely reported as a heavy-cavalry change, but it is not — it depends on the mount rather than the rider. Pistoliers and Marauder Horsemen are light cavalry and both sit on 30x60mm, while smaller mounts such as wolves and warhounds keep the old 25x50mm footprint. Our Old World base size guide sets out every size in the game, including the Bretonnian exception that may save you rebasing your knights at all.
Our movement trays can also give a unit the correct footprint without rebasing every model.
